Diving in the Far East

On the 2nd May 2015 13 KRH Officers and Soldiers deployed on Exercise Underwater Hawk- a two week diving expedition to The Philippines aiming to qualify 10 soldiers as BSAC Ocean Divers and the remainder as BSAC Sports Divers.
Picture
Battling against the elements (white sand, clear blue water etc) from the start it was clear they had their work cut out. Only the fantastic programme provided by staff from Bovington Dive Centre combining theory study with dives to various depths and conditions allowed all members of the trip to be awarded the qualification they set out to achieve.

The prohibition of diving within 24hrs of flying also allowed for some cultural exploration which revealed a fascinating part of the world no member of the trip had travelled to before. After such a hectic training year it was a truly fantastic experience, and a repetition of the trip next year is already in the planning stages!

A Hawk in Mongolia

As part of the 'Britain is Great' initiative, the British Army Polo team deployed to Mongolia to develop the UK-Mongolia polo partnership. The intention of the trip was to foster greater relations between the Mongolian and British Armies through the game of polo and proved to be a great success. Capt George Walker was fortunate to find himself on the team and you can read the report below:
A long and arduous trip via Tokyo, meant that the team had already flown over Mongolia twice and so welcomed the landing in Ulaan Bataar. Training commenced the following day at an Army base four hours drive from the capital  where there was to be 3 days of polo coaching provided to the Mongolian Army team. Thankfully two interpreters had been provided as none of the players could understand English and, with waving of the arms to assist, rapid improvement was seen.  Capt George Walker proved very amusing to the Mongolians; as he mounted their much shorter ponies he found he could  help his pony go faster by putting his feet on the ground and running.

After the three days, the trip concluded with a polo tournament where a large number of dignitaries appeared to watch including the Mongolian Foreign Minister, the British Embassy Chargé D’affaires, and the Defence Attaché Brigadier Simon Levey LD. It was a huge success as apparently there had never been an occasion to date where so many diplomats had been together.  Thankfully the British Army Team that was providing the coaching secured first place in the tournament. The same can't be said for their wrestling skills, however, as Capt Walker was thrown to the ground by a man half his size in the post-tournament entertainment.

Antigua Sailing Week

April saw a small group from the KRH embark on a long flight to Antigua to compete alongside and against professional, semi-professional and amateur crews.

Antigua Sailing Week is the last hurrah for the sailing season in the Caribbean and as Zarafa, owned by Maj (ret'd) Schofield, of Royal Hussars fame, had been in the West Indies since January it was fitting that she would compete in the final competition. Upon arrival the crew took advantage of the two days to get some training done before the races began. When they did begin, it was clear that the other boats weren't going to make it easy and races quickly became hard work.

A huge effort saw the crew take home third place on the Monday and second place on the Tuesday. After one poor and one brilliant race on Thursday Zarafa sat in fourth place and the team took the usual journey from Nelson's Dockyard to the start buoys on the final day eager to make the podium. In the end they were narrowly beaten as they came joint third to the second meaning they missed the podium by half a point.

It was a great end to the season despite the disappointing position but the trip wasn't over when racing finished. As it was her last week, Zarafa needed to be shipped home and the boat to Southampton was leaving from St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. After a long overnight passage the crew stopped off in Tortola, British Virgin Islands before the final leg.

A truly spectacular place to sail and one that made the boys back in camp bitterly jealous not to go on! Here's to the start of the British season in colder waters.

Hawks in Italia

As the Seventieth Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day approached a contingent from the KRH joined a number of ex 14/20th in the commemoration of a battle fought in Italy seventy years ago. The trip to Italy was paired with a battlefield tour of Monte Cassino for crew commanders and above from across the Regiment.
In April 2015, a group of NCOs and Officers put their thinking caps on to take part in the battlefield tour of pivotal sites around the campaign in Monte Cassino that eventually led to the fall of Rome and the continuation of the Allied offensive against Axis forces. Discussion stands were mixed with planning within groups and historical background giving a unique perspective on the battles that caused so many casualties. Everyone was reminded of the relevance of history in today’s planning cycles as we worked out what we might have done on the ground that day. Medicina is now the Corporals’ Mess battle honour, and they joined the group in the town alongside members of “Noah’s Arc”. There was a proud march around before the unveiling a new commemorative plaque. As everybody on parade watched on Italian school children sang and the last surviving men from the Regiment took pride of place. A proud day to be a King’s Royal Hussar!

Hawks Rugby Tour - Cardiff

5/5/2015

In April the thirty five strong squad of the Hawks RUFC departed for Cardiff on the 2015 rugby tour. The tour saw the biggest team of KRH players assembled for several seasons and contained all ranks from the newest troopers to the Commanding Officer. Training initially focussed on team cohesion and our defensive game, with pioneering training methods being utilised by the coach Captain Nige Hinton. The squad were expecting to work hard on the pitch but salsa dancing lessons to improve nimbleness and an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Millennium Stadium to fortify the moral component of the team, were pleasant surprises!

The first match against Capt Hinton’s old club, Penarth RUFC, saw the team fight valiantly against an experienced side, with the score level at 10-10 at half time. However in the second half Penarth showed their superior skill and the final score was 32-10 to the home team. Determined not to let this setback be repeated, the team worked on their game plan and aggressive defence and in the second match against Barry RUFC their hard work paid off with a 29-5 victory to the Hawks. Particular Mention must go to LCpl Robanakndavu whose powerful runs were the key to many of our points and to our former RMO, Capt Dave Hindmarsh, whose return to the team saw his efforts rewarded with a trip to A and E to have his eyebrow stitched!

Meribel Adventurers

In April, 48 soldiers and officers travelled to Meribel to complete their Military Ski Foundation level one and two courses. After the mammoth twelve hour drive from Tidworth to the French Alps the two groups from C and D Squadrons split into ability groups and hit the slopes with vigour. With the level one course taking complete novices through the initial lessons and the level two course jumping straight to advanced carving, off-piste skiing and ski touring, everybody was pushed to their limits – even the veterans of several race seasons in Verbier!

The two week camp was a resounding success with special mentions going to LCpl Stancombe for his tenacity in more than keeping up with the advanced group despite only having six days of skiing experience before, Cpl Parr for enjoying ski touring so much that he decided to take his own off-piste routing (resulting in a near rescue mission) and the select group who conquered the Grand Couloir in Courchavel, rated as one of the top five unpisted black runs in the world.
