Castlemartin Ranges

14/10/2015

Not many will know that a picturesque corner of west Wales is home to a training area that can host the fearsome weapons of the heavy armoured regiments of the British Army.

In September, three Squadrons of the KRH deployed to Pembrokeshire for the annual live firing package in a place called Castlemartin Ranges. Despite the stunning scenery nearby, the ranges have been used for decades and the Regiment is a frequent visitor.

This year A (xHx) & B (XIV) Sqns transported the heavy tanks from Tidworth to Wales before firing all the way up to Troop level. This included the annual crew tests which see Troopers, NCOs, and Officers all firing a testing array of serials.
While the two Sabre Sqns fired their 120mm ammunition, D (XH) Sqn were honing their skills as Reconnaissance Troop fired their CVR(T) Scimitars. In the end the Regiment completed a fantastic training package before returning home. The two best crews will fire at the Mounted Gunnery Competition against the other Royal Armoured Corps regiments in late October.
