Between October and December 2014, The King’s Royal Hussars Battlegroup deployed to Zagan, South West Poland as the British Army’s Lead Armoured Battlegroup on Ex BLACK EAGLE. This saw more than 1300 British soldiers and over 100 armoured vehicles, including Challenger 2 Main Battle Tanks and Warrior Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicles, from the 3rd UK Division deploy in joint exercises. The Polish deployed their 10th Armoured Brigade, equipped with Leopard 2 tanks and BMP armoured personnel carriers.
Some of the Challenger 2s, which saw action a decade ago in Iraq, were brought out of storage in Germany and updated with the latest armour and communications equipment. The Combined Service Support Group (CSSG), which deployed alongside the KRH BG, was responsible for providing support for this fleet and the rest of the Battlegroup.
A significant demonstration of the UK’s support to the region and NATO’s Immediate Assurance Measures, Ex BLACK EAGLE also highlighted the British Army’s ability to deploy an Armoured Battlegroup at short notice anywhere in the world in support of the nation’s allies.
