KRH Appeal - Frequently Asked Questions

Why has the Appeal been launched?

The King's Royal Hussars is an Armoured Regiment that has provided troops for a variety of combat operations in recent years. As such, we have incurred a number of casualties, and with a major deployment planned for 2012, we are conscious of the fact that we may again take casualties, some of which may require caring for long into the future. The Regiment has an existing Welfare Trust Fund that provides welfare grants for our soldiers and their families. The aim of this Appeal is to add to this trust fund in order to cater for future requirements, particularly the more complex and as yet undefined psychological problems that can take years to materialise. The Appeal will allow the Regiment to make a difference to the lives of soldiers and their families who have been adversely affected by operations.

How will the proceeds be used?

Current operations in Afghanistan and as yet unknown operations in the future, along with the possibility of further casualties, will place extraordinary demands on the serving Regiment, their families, and particularly those forced to leave the service through disability. The KRH Appeal is designed to support and improve the lives of those who may have suffered hardship associated with their service in the Regiment, whether that is past, present or future service. We will do in a range of ways, including:

1) Support the families and extended families of those killed in action by promptly responding to problems of bereavement and hardship
2) Support those wounded or injured on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the service
3) Provide assistance in finding them new employment and help them become active members of their family and community
4) Support the families of those wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations

Trustees will have the discretion to use the Fund to enhance the welfare of soldiers and their families to relieve hardship or distress, either generally or individually, of serving or former members of the Regiment, and to provide grants to any other charity or charitable organization associated with the Regiment.

Who are the Trustees?

The current Regimental Trustees registered with the Charity Commission.

Don't other charities such as The Royal British Legion, SSAFA, ABF and Help 4 Heroes already provide this support?

There are many charities which currently provide excellent support to HM Forces, and in some cases we shall be working closely with these in joint fundraising events. However, having funds immediately available, at very short notice, will ensure we can provide the personal support we believe the Regiment's soldiers and their families deserve. In addition, many areas we would like to support such as helping extended families would not normally be covered by the major charities. The existing support is good, but there is a clear role for the Regiment to augment and to provide more.

Does the Government not have a Duty of Care to our soldiers?

Whilst the immediate and short-term care for wounded soldiers lies wholly with the Ministry of Defence, and thereafter with appropriate Government Departments such as the NHS, the Regiment would like to continue to assist soldiers and their families for as long as may be required. The Regimental Trust Fund should be at the heart of the recovery of all those soldiers and families who have been affected by serious injury or disability by providing the right support at the right time in the right place. In addition, many areas we would like to support such as helping extended families would not normally be covered by MOD and Government funding.

How will the Appeal be raising money?

Fundraising will initially be on the basis of a two-year campaign finishing in April 2013 which will cover the preparation, deployment ,and recovery from our next operational tour. However, the Fund will remain open thereafter. The Regiment and our friends are the target of the appeal, which distinguishes it from large public appeals such as Help 4 Heroes and the Royal British Legion. A small executive committee of volunteers will provide the focus and co-ordination from within the Regiment, however it is hoped that the wider Regimental family will enjoy this opportunity to show support for the serving Regiment and organize fundraising events.

Who is the Appeal aimed at?

The Appeal is primarily aimed at serving and former members of the Regiment, their families and friends. While donations are welcome from members of the public, we would like to stress that this should not be at the expense of the main Service Charities, with whom we work closely for the benefit of our servicemen.

How can I raise money for the Appeal?

We are always looking for volunteers to run projects and come up with ideas. So if you would like to help, please contact the KRH Appeal Office.
